In praise of table tennis: ‘My fitness has improved, my game is getting better, and my hand to eye co-ordination improves from week to week’

When someone suggested Deirdre White attend a table tennis class last year she hesitated at first. The 57-year-old mother of one from Newbawn, Co Wexford thought she’d be no good at it.

“I wasn’t a sporty child,” she says. “In fact if there was a race I’d usually be the one to come last.”

She gave the class — a pilot scheme to get people with chronic illnesses exercising — a go nonetheless, and she hasn’t looked back. Read more
