Hamnet giving bereaved parents an outlet to discuss their loss, says charity

Award-winning film Hamnet is sparking conversations on losing a child in Ireland, a charity has said.

The film, which picked up a Golden Globe earlier this month, stars Oscar-nominated Jessie Buckley and portrays the loss of William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes’ 11-year-old son, Hamnet.

It chronicles the couple’s grief before and after losing Hamnet to the plague, with William Shakespeare, played by Paul Mescal, travelling back and forth between London and Stratford-upon-Avon, where Agnes, played by Buckley, lives with their daughter Judith.

All-island charity Anam Cara, which supports bereaved parents, says as a society, Irish people often do not know how to respond to such tragedy as the loss of a child.

CEO Michelle Reynolds said: “Hamnet portrays grief not as something neat or easily resolved, but as something that lives in the body and in everyday life.

“The film shows how parents grieve differently, and how loss can affect relationships in lasting ways,” Ms Reynolds said…https://www.independent.ie/entertainment/movies/hamnet-giving-bereaved-parents-an-outlet-to-discuss-their-loss-says-charity/a208950132.html
