Bewley’s brewing up new comedy hub

Bewley’s Grafton Street is set to become a top comedy hub for the first time next month, kicking off with sets from two stand-up stalwarts.

Experienced Edinburgh Festival Fringe comedians – Aideen McQueen and Paul Marsh – will get the laughs going at the iconic Dublin venue on July 13 and July 19.

Last year, McQueen gave two sell-out performances at the famous Scottish arts festival and was nominated for Best Performer at the Dublin Fringe Festival.

She has also performed at the Vodafone Comedy Festival, Electric Picnic and Prague Comedy Festival.

“I can’t wait to play Bewley’s Theatre Café, it’s a legendary spot where the air is thick with drama and history,” she said.

“I am excited to crack jokes in a place where the coffee is as strong as the punchlines.”

Marsh, who works with Dublin Fire Brigade, first made a splash in the Irish comedy scene in 2011, when he won Ireland’s biggest newcomer competition in The Capital Comedy Club.

He has since supported some of Ireland’s top comedians, including Neil Delamere, PJ Gallagher and Karl Spain and published a book of one liners, Irish Dad Jokes, in 2022.

“I remember going into Bewley’s on trips to the city from Tipperary as a child,” he said.

“I never imagined I’d be able to perform a set in this cornerstone of Dublin history and I’m excited to help fill it with laughter.”

Marsh will perform his show 999 Problems, which he will then bring to Edinburgh Fringe from August 1-12.

“We’re looking forward to opening our doors to the comedy crowd this July,” said Felix Campbell, Bewley’s Grafton Street Events Manager.

“From afternoon tea and wine tastings, to theatre and now comedy gigs, we’re offering something for everyone this summer.”

Tickets for both comedy nights available at the door on July 13 (Aideen McQueen) and July 19 (Paul Marsh), for €15.

Doors open at 7.30pm, shows begin at 8.30pm.
